Launch month is an immersive 4-week experience for young adults looking to jumpstart their future.  BaMidbar uses wilderness and adventure-based experiences as a vehicle to promote self-reflection and community connection, while helping participants build a toolkit to face life’s challenges.

Using the outdoors as our medium and our clinical model as our lens, students learn and practice skills to help ease the transition from adolescence to adulthood. While our Wilderness Therapy program touches on many of the same themes, Launch Month supports a motivated and self-directed population. Students are people who may feel lost, or stuck, but who do not require immediate treatment or placement. They see the value in a self-development experience, but perhaps are unable to dedicate 10 full weeks to the endeavor. Our Launch Month students are invested in the program, and motivated to be there.

Each week, the group will dive into a new developmental theme aligned with our intended outcome areas and based in BaMidbar’s standard therapeutic curriculum.

  • Week 1: Kavanah (setting intentions and goals)
  • Week 2: Yirah (transforming obstacles into opportunities for growth)
  • Week 3: Kesher (healthy relationships with self and others)
  • Week 4: Kehilla (strength of a supportive, inclusive community and preparing to reintegrate back into community)

With these themes in mind, the group embarks on weekly masa’ot (excursions) and returns to basecamp for Shabbat. Masa’ot may include backcountry and adventure-based programming such as backpacking, mountain biking, climbing, snowshoeing, and horseback riding. No previous experience is necessary. Every masa and therapeutic exercise is crafted to simultaneously support and challenge each individual student, allowing them to discover who they are, who they want to be, where they want to go, and how they’re going to get there. Individual therapy, group therapy, and regular processing debriefs are woven into the program structure to give space for intentional reflection, learning, and growth.
